About Orientation Week
Orientation will take place from Monday, August 3rd to Friday, August 7th. From Monday to Thursday, you will attend and participate in activities that will help you become familiar with the buildings on the Health Science Campus, the curriculum, the faculty, and also your fellow classmates. During the evenings, there will be social events that will allow you can get to know your classmates and interact with upper year medical students! Orientation ends with the White Coat Ceremony taking place on Friday, August 7th at 10 AM (you should arrive at 9 AM).
A brief description of each day of orientation can be found below. A final schedule will be released before orientation begins. For your planning purposes, it is important to note that each day of orientation starts between 7:30 AM and 8 AM and ends in the afternoon. Please note: the White Coat Ceremony arrival time is 9:00 AM at main campus, NOT MERB. Social events begin in the early evening.
Monday, August 3rd: Welcome to Medical School (8:00 AM - 5:30 PM)
Today is a general welcome to TUSM from the Dean's Office, Office of Admissions, and the Student Government. In addition you will tour the Health Science Campus, receive your white coat, and interact with faculty at an afternoon reception.
What to bring today: Child Abuse Clearance Forms and a change of clothes (casual attire, swimsuit and towel), Temple ID card, and Drivers Licence for the evening social event.
Social Event: (6:30 PM - 10:30 PM) The day will conclude with a BBQ party at a local park where you can get to know each other as well as upper year medical students. There will be a pool, so bring a bathing suit if you would like to swim.
Tuesday, August 4th: Nuts and Bolts of Temple Medical School (8:00 AM - 3:30 PM)
Today, you will learn about the resources offered by TUSM, such as Financial Aid, Technology, Student Well Being, and Security on Campus. In addition, you will discuss your summer reading book selection with upper year medical students.
Social Event: (7:30 PM) This evening, you will first meet with your Doctoring College at a restaurant in Center City. Then, you will re-join the rest of the class for a combined social activity.
Wednesday, August 5th: Introduction to the Profession (8:00 AM - 4:00 PM)
Today, you will learn about the clinical education component of the curriculum. This will done via case presentations and discussions with faculty. You will also hear insights from upper year medical students and enjoy an afternoon BBQ sponsored by the Student Government.
What to bring today: A change of clothes for the BBQ and Phillies game (casual attire).
Social Event: (7:00 PM) Attend a Philadelphia Phillies game sponsored by the Alumni Association! RSVP here if you would like to attend.
Thursday, August 6th: Introduction to Medical School (7:30 AM - 4:00 PM)
Today you will learn about your first block, Anatomy. You will receive a introduction to the course from the block director, meet your lab group, and receive your lab equipment. The day will conclude with a community site visit.
What to bring today: Your new Temple med t-shirt!
No social event is scheduled for this day.
Friday, August 7th: White Coat Ceremony (Arrive at 9:00 AM)
The ceremony will take place at the Temple Performing Arts Center on Main Campus (1837 North Broad Street) (not the Health Sciences Campus). Don’t forget your White Coat and Tickets! Students are expected to arrive by 9:00 AM for line-up and the ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM.
Dress is business professional (no jackets required, since you will be receiving your white coat).
If Driving: Free parking for students and families will be provided for the event at Liacouras Garage (15th between Cecil B. Moore & Montgomery). When entering the garage say that you are parking for the White Coat Ceremony.
If Taking Public Transportation (SEPTA): Broad Street Line local to “Cecil B. Moore” stop, then walk to the Temple Performing Arts Center 1 block away (on the East side of Broad). A map will be provided in your orientation materials.
After the ceremony, there will be a reception for attendees at Mitten Hall (next door to Pthaterforming Arts Center) at 1913 N. Broad Street.

Monday to Wednesday: For all activities that take place during the day from 8 AM to the afternoon, you are expected to dress in Business Casual. For evening social activities on these days, you may wear whatever you choose; there is no dress code for socials, but please remember that you are representing TUSM.
Thursday: You will be going out into the community this day to learn about the community and participate in service. You should wear the red Temple T-shirt you received during orientation week and comfortable pants and shoes.
Friday: Dress for the White Coat ceremony is Business Professional. However, for men and women, you do not need to wear blazers, sport coats, cardigans, sweaters, or other jackets as you will be "coated" on this day.
Business Casual:
- For men: Slacks, khakis, dress pants with a button-down shirt, nice polo, or nice sweater. Tie is optional. Professional shoes. (No jeans, shorts, T-shirts, sandals, running shoes, hats.)
- For women: Dress pants, slacks, skirts and dresses that end no more than a few inches above your knee. Button-down, blouse, sweaters, and cardigans are all acceptable. Flats or appropriate heels (3 inches or less). (No jeans, shorts, T-shirts, sandals, running shoes, hats.)
